Tanzania was reported to have been struck by a strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale. Luckily, no casualties had been reported. A quake of this magnitude had the potential to cause substantial damage in a populated area, but the area was mainly farmland and was lightly populated.A regional police commander in the town of Sumbawanga, close to Mbeya, said there were three tremors within 10 minutes. "The first one was very, very big. My bed was shaking. I got out of the house to see if there was any damage, but everything was okay," Lamech Kibacho told Reuters. However, someone who lived 200km north of Mbeya, Abubakar Mgumya, told BBC News Online that he had not heard the earthquake. However the regional commissioner of Kigoma, Mr Mgumya ,told the fisher around the lake, the police and even his weathermen but nobody seemed to know about the earthquake. Lake Tanganyika lies about 900 km (600 miles) west of the capital, Dar es Salaam did not felt the earthquake there as well.
